What is the difference between Legal Secretaries and paralegals?

Legal secretaries are an essential part of law offices, their work involves the day to day operation of the office to make sure things run smooth, phones are answered and routed properly, files are managed, appointments are scheduled, calendars are maintained, database is taken care of, travel arrangements are made and many more. Their work does not require legal knowledge.

On the other hand, Paralegals perform most legal work that attorneys would require to do themselves for their cases. Paralegals require an understanding and knowledge of the law. Paralegals must be able to conduct research, analyze and evaluate relevant facts, organize and communicate the findings properly. Paralegals require more in-depth education and training in law. For this reason, Paralegals earn more money than legal secretaries.
